Success Story: Isles Do it Best
Switch to RockSolid Was “Pretty Much a No-Brainer”
It took Bill Zeithammer less than six months to feel right at home after he switched to the RockSolid POS system, from ECi Software Solutions, to run his hardware store. Literally. “Moving to RockSolid made it very easy for me to work more from my house,” he reports. “All I have to do is sign in to the logmein.com program and I can review sales, place orders or do anything else with the program no matter where I am.”
Zeithammer’s new-found freedom is just one way switching to RockSolid has made life easier and more productive at Isles Do it Best in Punta Gorda, Florida. Being able to run the business remotely is a nice plus, but some of the other benefits show up in far more tangible ways.
A cost-saving solution, right from the beginning
Zeithammer and his wife, Anne, opened their store in 2000 and had used the same system to run it up until last fall.
“It was a good system but, for a store like ours, it was very expensive,” Zeithammer recalls. “Our server was old and we knew we had to replace it, so it seemed like a good time to see what else might be out there.”
After doing his due diligence, Zeithammer settled on RockSolid, a decision that he describes as “pretty much a no-brainer.”
“We needed a new server and two new POS terminals and it turned out I could get all the equipment we needed—brand new—plus the software and maintenance, for less than the monthly fees we had been paying for maintenance alone!” he reports.
And once Zeithammer started looking in earnest at RockSolid, the more he saw, the more he liked. “It was clearly a very robust organization with a strong staff and no doubts about their long-term viability,” he says. “Plus, they spoke a language I could understand instead of a lot of high-tech jargon. I’m a hardware guy, not a computer programmer and I really felt RockSolid understood that and were set up to take care of us on those terms.”
A smooth conversion thanks to knowledgeable RockSolid technicians
Once the decision had been made to switch to RockSolid, Zeithammer found even more reasons to be happy about the move.
“Four or five days after committing to RockSolid, I had equipment in the store and a trainer who was assigned to walk me through the whole process and get me comfortable with the system. And not only was he an expert on the software, but his parents had owned a hardware store themselves, so he knew about my business and understood what was important to me.”
Thanks to that careful preparation, the switchover itself was almost trouble-free. “Everything went fine when we converted to RockSolid,” reports Zeithammer. “There were a few minor problems but they were taken care of very quickly. And since then, I’ve typically not had a problem that lasted longer than just a few hours at most. RockSolid’s technical support has been very responsive.”
After the system was up and running, Zeithammer soon discovered that even with savings on a grand scale, he still had access to all the computer power he needed and then some!
“I was very pleasantly surprised by all the bells and whistles that came with RockSolid,” he says with a wry smile. “Even without the savings, the switch to RockSolid would have made sense for us, because it handles things so much more easily than our previous system.”
For example, Zeithammer reports, when he sits down to place an order in RockSolid, all the information he needs—inventory on hand, monthly sales history, recommended order quantity, etc.—is available to him on just one screen, whereas before, he needed to navigate across multiple screens before sending in the order.
And there’s a similar story when it comes to implementing price changes: Everything he needs to know is in place on one screen and that means decision-making and implementation both are a whole lot easier.
Reporting is easy
Zeithammer says RockSolid’s flexibility and user-friendliness when it comes to generating reports on key aspects of his operations are also streets ahead of what he was used to.
“Our old system had a report generator but it was very difficult to understand if you were a non-IT person,” he remembers. “You get a lot of pre-written reports with the system and if you need more than what they give you, you can put together a custom report in RockSolid without needing a degree in computer programming.”
For example, Zeithammer recently needed to identify items in his plumbing department that were being discontinued because of new, no-lead requirements.
“It took me no time to generate a custom report that not only gave me a list of the items I needed, but also sorted it by location, so I could just walk down the aisle and track them down as I went,” he reports.
For any business, bringing in new software can be daunting to say the least. And when you’re running a small business, wearing multiple hats and operating with no on-site computer expertise to call on, it holds the potential to turn into a full-blown disaster.
But thanks to careful preparation and service-oriented technical support from RockSolid, none of that happened to Bill Zeithammer and his team at Isles Do It Best. Instead, they are finding it not only far easier to run the business than it used to be but also, a whole lot less expensive.
